The Discovery Route: Cycling Brazil’s Historic Coastline
More than 500 years later, the sun still shines brightly, the local people are incredibly welcoming, and the tropical landscape continues to astonish anyone who explores the coastal paths of Bahía. Stretching from Arraial d’Ajuda to Prado, the Route of Discovery treats cyclists to the same pristine paradise encountered by Pedro Álvares Cabral and his crew when they first landed in Brazil on April 22, 1500.
Biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest
Despite the development of local villages over the centuries, Bahía still preserves vast, untouched sanctuaries boasting crystal-clear waters and an incredibly diverse fauna and flora. The native Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) here holds over 450 distinct species of flora and more than 400 species of birds per hectare. It is no wonder the first European explorers truly believed they had reached paradise on earth.
Recognized as a World Natural Heritage site for its invaluable environmental importance, this region is strictly preserved. In addition to the historic Monte Pascoal National Park, two major national parks protect this territory: Pau-Brasil (in Porto Seguro) and Descobrimento (in Prado)—making it an unparalleled setting for a world-class cycling expedition.
Riding the Atlantic Tides
Because a significant portion of this journey takes place directly on the coast, our daily schedule revolves around the ocean’s rhythm. Every morning, we check the tide charts with local fishermen; riding during low tide ensures the ocean sand is wet, packed, and perfectly rideable. Pro tip: running a slightly lower tire pressure makes gliding across the sand an absolute breeze!
