MTB on the Whales’ Route

Cycling across Península Valdés is a unique way to discover Patagonia at one of its brightest moments. Spring spreads across the steppe, and the long days invite riders to explore its scenic gravel roads by bike.

The Atlantic Ocean accompanies many of these journeys with its intense light and the constant sound of the breaking waves. The route connects iconic places such as Puerto Pirámides, Caleta Valdés, and Punta Norte. It is an ideal time to observe sea lions, elephant seals, and a great diversity of birdlife.

Bike & Whale Watching

In the gulf, it is still possible to encounter the impressive Southern Right Whale before the season comes to an end. Pods are frequently spotted close to shore. You can learn more about the Southern Right Whales and their conservation programs.

Meanwhile, the ride unfolds across open horizons, wild fauna, and the breathtaking vastness of Patagonia. Every kilometer brings the cyclist closer to the natural essence of Valdés. Moreover, it is a vital refuge for seabirds and many other species, making the region a true wildlife sanctuary. Join us for an unforgettable adventure on our “MTB on the Whales’ Route” bike tour!

Day 1:

Meet & greet at the hotel in Puerto Madryn. Time to set up bikes. Dinner and briefing of the tour.
2

Day 2: Puerto Madryn to Puerto Piramides

We begin the adventure with a short transfer to cross the industrial area of Puerto Madryn. The ride starts at the beginning of a new bike path that follows the coast of the Argentine Sea, skirting the calm waters of Golfo Nuevo. Manara Beach and El Doradillo are key spots for whale watching during high tide. The route continues toward the heart of Península Valdés, crossing wide plains of Patagonian steppe….

Day 3: Whale watching boat excursion + Blue eye ride

At last, the long-awaited day has arrived! From Puerto Pirámides, the boat heads into the waters of Golfo Nuevo and suddenly the powerful blow of a Southern Right Whale breaks the silence of the sea. The excitement is immediate as the enormous body emerges just a few meters from the boat and slowly glides before everyone’s eyes. In that moment, time seems to stand still and all you can hear is the sea, the whale’s breath, and the incredible feeling of being face to face with one of the giants of the ocean….

Day 4: Puerto Pirámides to Golfo San Jose

Today we set out to explore Golfo San José! We begin with a short vehicle transfer and enter a private ranch where sheep are raised. The route presents some challenges: we will ride along trails used by guanacos and, over seventeen kilometers with a moderate technical level, we approach Playa Villarino. During the ride, we will likely encounter guanacos and ñandús (rheas). Once we reach Playa Villarino, the scenery changes completely. Golfo San José is a refuge for whales with their calves, as well as for South American sea lions. After lunch we begin the return journey, with the option of cycling all the way back to Puerto Pirámides….

Day 5: Caleta Valdés to Punta Norte

The day begins after breakfast with a transfer to Caleta Valdés (Transfer: 80 km / 1 hr 10 min). Caleta Valdés welcomes us with the sun lighting up the coastline and the distant sound of elephant seals. It is a coastal lagoon (albufera) separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land. It is famous for being a protected refuge for elephant seals, sea lions, and penguins, and it is a key location for spotting orcas. The gravel road opens northward across the immense steppe of Península Valdés. The first kilometers pass among guanacos, choiques (lesser rheas)…

Day 6: Adiós Patagonia
